From canto 1 of the Finnish epic poem, The Kalevala, the goddess Ilmatar rises from her lament in primordial waters to ‘set about her creations’. In this performance vignette she traverses the birch ‘axis mundi’, or the world tree, as a conduit between the worlds of the physical and the ephemeral, a universal journey of the mythic and human alike.  Audio arrangement and vocals: Cherie Sampson;

Melody and lyrics, traditional). Created in Ilomantsi, Finland.  (Version 1, 2008; version 2: 2012).  HDV/16:9
